The town of Meeker is named for Nathan C. Meeker, the United States Native American agent who was killed along with 11 other U.S. citizens by Ute Indians in the 1879 Meeker Massacre.   The site of the massacre is located along State Highway 64 in the White River Valley east of town and is marked by a prominent sign.  After the massacre and the ensuing conflict known as the Ute War, the Ute population was forced to relocate to reservations in Utah and the United States Army established a garrison on the current site of the town.  The town was founded in 1883 following the removing of troops.  The White River Museum in town is located just north of the Rio Blanco County Courthouse.  

Meeker as become Nationally known for the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship trials.  This popular event hosts competitors from all over the world, and is held annually in September.   Hunting opportunities abound in the Meeker area.  The White River National Forest is reported to be home of the largest elk herd in the United States numbering about 30,000 animals.  The White River hunting area is a land of extremes dominated by the flat tops Wilderness Area at approximately 235,035 acres and an elevation of 7,600 to 12,994 feet.  The Beautiful Whiter River National Forest is the host to an abundance of Wildlife and offers the only known River that freezes from the bottom up.
